What Is a Woman?

A common question among the disingenuous anti-trans crowd is "What is a woman?" Intended as a "gotcha" in which the person answering defines a woman as a person with XX chromosomes, or female genitalia, or a specific hormone balance, what these people don't understand is that this question has been a subject of rumination for over 100 years. Mary Wollstonecraft wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792, first wave feminism began in the late 19th Century, Simone de Beauvoir wrote The Second Sex in 1949, and of course, there is still a vibrant feminist movement today working to address ongoing issues with equal rights, pay disparity, domestic responsibilities, and more.
